Chapter Thirty-Five
Two Weeks Later
The sound of drills and the familiar scent of motor oil, metal, and gemstone shavings permeated the air from the admin building to the garage. Ember greeted her uncle in his office with a kiss on the cheek, then set two bags of takeout on the cluttered desk. Cheeseburgers, fries, and creamy chocolate shakes for dessert. Everything Aunt Myrria had officially barred him from eating a week ago.
Unzipping her heavy white coat freed Emberâs freely flowing hair, fitted deep green turtleneck, and dark blue jeans. She hung it on the back of her chair and dug in. As they ate, Devin went over the pictures on the walls. From his military days and newlywed years to Emberâs adoption, all of them carried a story he remembered as if it happened yesterday. Though he had always been a sentimental storyteller, Uncle Devin had been reminiscing a lot more than usual the last couple weeks. Every little thing reminded him of one special time or another.
If not for his non-stop stories, the Li house wouldâve been a prison of quiet tension. Aunt Myrria had been distant ever since Ember stayed out late with Arik. The omega apologized and hadnât repeated the offense, but the displeased elder didnât seem ready to forgive her anytime soon.
âI asked enya if she wanted anything and she said no. She even turned down her favorite pie. I didnât think she would be mad at me for this long. I almost miss her fussing at me all the time.â
âYour auntieâs not mad at you, sheâs mad at me.â
âYou?â
âWeâre sort ofâ¦at odds about life at the moment.â
That was his code for âweâre fighting.â Ember wouldnât be surprised if she was the subject of at least one of the conflicts.
âBut donât worry,â he continued. âI plan to make up with her on the trip, so weâll be gone a little longer than usual.â
âHow long?â
âI canât say, but longer than a week, Iâm sure.â
âWell, while youâre hard at work earning her forgiveness, get some for me, too.â
Devin chuckled, making Ember grin as nibbled on a fry. He leaned back in his chair and cupped the back of his head with both hands.
âYou know, Iâve been thinking about when you were little, how you used to hang out here from sunup to sundown, getting into all kinds of mess. Calliope would bring you over in something cute and frilly and by the dayâs end, youâd be covered head to toe in soot. I miss those days.â
Ember grinned, narrowed her eyes in faux suspicion, and pointed at him with a fry.
âAre you trying to coax free labor out of me, old man?â
Uncle Devin laughed loud and heartily. âEy, you got me!â
Ember didnât realize how long it had been since they spent time together like this until Uncle Devin called her at work and asked to have lunch together. His recent mushiness summoned an urge within the young mage to get back what they had. She would be sure to come by the shop more often when he and Myrria returned.
